THE HIDN LAMP

a product designed to dampen the biggest distraction at bedtime, cellphones.

PRODUCT DESIGN, 3D MODELING AND RENDERING (PERSONAL PROJECT)

It all starts with research and insight.

Research

After surveying 124 young adults (age 20-30), 90% of respondents stated that they would benefit from a product that helped them reduce their screen time at night and improve their overall sleep regime.

Needs

Respondents stated that they’re seeking a product to add to their current routine, that reduces distraction, is multifunctional while still visually pleasing.

Problem

Nearly 30% of adults face insomnia.

Low sleep quantity and quality has become a prevalent issue in North America. Causing both long term and immediate risks, insufficient sleep has been linked to increased heart disease, mental health disorders and even car accidents or work-related injury. Lack of sleep has grown to become such a significant concern that the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in the United States has even declared insufficient sleep a "public health problem."

Electronic back-lit devices, such as cell phones, are among one of the top reasons causing disturbances during bedtime.

then comes the concept and ideation.

Concept

My goal was to design a lamp that served a purpose in both form and function.

Form: I focused on having rounded edges and neutral, earthy colours to soften the overall appearance. The exterior of the lamp should appear minimal while imitating the rounded shape of the sun to support the functional use of the product as a sunrise/sunset lamp.

Function: I prioritized hiding visual clutter and improving ease of use by constructing a hidden compartment to store away a cellphone. The compartment is able to be closed off by a sliding door for additional aid in minimizing distraction. For multifunctional use, the compartment also contains a wireless charger and touch sensitive settings.

3D sketch and prototyping

Clay Prototypes

In the absence of a 3D printer or other prototyping technology, I leveraged materials available to me to create 5-minute models

the solution.
